From the perspective of the musician, performer and stagehand, photographer Joseph Gray has had unusual access to the great Apollo Theater. Intimately familiar with Apollo's structural bones, Gray has taken more than 50,000 photographic images over the years.
In this exhibit we utilize 32 photographs to gain an intimate look inside and backstage into the iconic building, capturing the intense feelings and memories living within the walls, dressing rooms, riggings, and the legendary Apollo stage. Gray first came to the Apollo in his twenties as the drummer for the R&B band, Cameo. Having worked with many groups as a vocalist, he continues to be the crowd pleasing show opener for the venerable Wednesday Night Amateur Competition.
